Athletes will race the age that they are on December 31, 2014. (Example: If you are racing on June 7th and turn 10 in August you are racing as a 10 year old).  Athletes are allowed to choose the untimed 1-mile fun run or the timed 5K (3.1 miles).  All courses and distances are organized with an emphasis on fitness, fun and safety.

What is the cost to enter?

No refunds or transfers are permitted.

What are the general rules for race day?

  • Race numbers (Bibs) must be worn at all times during the race. These may be attached either with a race belt, or fastened with safety pins to the athlete’s apparel top.

  • Parents and/or guardians are not allowed on course.

  • Parents and/or guardians act as agents to their athletes and unsportsmanlike acts can have their athlete disqualified.  PEM staff and volunteers are the only ones with the right to disqualify an athlete.  Good sportsmanship will be rewarded and the Hy-Vee Kids Road Races encourages athletes to put on their best performance but also be respectful of staff, volunteers, city officials, vendors and other participants.

  • Headphones are not illegal but are discouraged.  We play really great music that you won’t want to miss anyway!

  • Skates, rollerblades, skateboards, scooters, strollers and animals are not allowed on course unless they are approved by PEM staff.

What is the course like?

Venue information and course specifics will be posted to each specific location’s page. Course maps will be available online several weeks prior to each event.  PEM staff will also communicate in advance any issues that may occur in relation to weather that may affect the race.

What do I need to bring to packet pick-up?

A parent/guardian will be required to bring identification and sign a waiver for each athlete on-site prior to the athlete participating.  It is mandatory and a waiver must be signed by the athlete’s parent or guardian.  No one is allowed to pick up packets for someone that is not their child.  Packet pick-up will take place both the day prior to the race, as well as on race morning.  All athletes must check-in at packet pick-up in order to receive their race materials.  Staff and volunteers will be present to assist you throughout the process.

My child has a disability, what accommodations can you make at the race?

We are more than happy to make personal accommodations for your athlete based on his/her abilities that are tailored to the particular event. Please contact Laura at for further discussion on how we can create a successful race experience for your child.

I have a medical condition. Where should I put this information?

Our first and foremost concern at any race is athlete safety and well-being. Please detail any medical concerns during the registration process, as well as provide a list of medications that the athlete is currently taking. Additionally, please provide an on-site cell phone number for an emergency contact during the registration process. Each race site is staffed with a team of highly-trained and highly-qualified medical personnel to meet the needs of any athlete who may require assistance. An ambulance will also be present on-site to respond to emergency needs. A medical tent will be located at the finish line. If your athlete requires medical attention, please check-in at the medical tent or notify a staff member.

What is the parent/guardian conduct policy?

The Hy-Vee Kids Road Races environment is a safe and fun place for kids to participate, be active and enjoy their youth! In order to ensure that all athletes walk away with the best experience, we need to uphold a positive and supportive atmosphere at all times. Parents are asked to be supportive of all the children that are participating and striving to achieve their goals. Bad conduct from a parent cannot only result in a disqualification of their own child, but also a ban from all Hy-Vee Kids Fitness races. Bad conduct constitutes the following (but is not limited to):

  • Negative comments to your own child or another child

  • Yelling at staff, volunteers, race officials, other parents or participants

  • Interference with participants or race officials, etc.

If you have a dispute, it is mandatory to notify Hy-vee Kids Road Races race official within 30 minutes of the completion of the race, which will then be addressed by the Race Director. We will not address any disputes after this time. Please do not discuss issues with volunteers or anyone other than staff. The Hy-Vee Kids Road Races staff is committed to resolve your issue swiftly, and to discuss your concern in a calm and constructive manner. Please also keep in mind your audience as you are addressing your dispute. We will not tolerate foul language, extreme outbursts, or aggressive attitudes in front of our young athletes.
